When you are applying for an internship or a job on another continent, it’s kind of difficult to come in for an interview. And with the Corona-virus raging all over the world, it has simply become impossible. Luckily for us, technology has enabled us to do a job interview without leaving our house.

Online video interviews using Skype, Hangouts, Zoom, or any other platform, have increased in popularity over the years. With the current situation it will only become more popular, so it’s good to know how to be properly prepared for an online interview.

Though it might be harder for the older generations, it can be challenging for any job seeker. Being in front of a camera is difficult for a lot of people. Nerves might set in. Digital stage fright even, haha. That is human, and differs per person. However, there are some things that everyone can do to make sure they have the best online interview possible:

Don’t interview using your phone.
Please use your laptop or desktop computer to conduct the interview. You don’t look presentable holding your phone, and connections could drop due to some reason. Even better when doing your interview is to connect your computer with an Ethernet cable instead of WiFi, to get the strongest signal possible.

Make sure you have a clean background.
The interview is about you, and you only. If you have a messy background, or things that may distract the interviewer, it will take away from the interview. Good lighting, positioning, and a plain background are the way to go.

Prepare yourself properly.
It is recommended that you practice well beforehand. Some people might need to get used to the camera. Have you noticed how hard it is to smile like a normal human being? No? Just me? Well I practiced my smile for a long time before I was convinced I didn’t look like a crazy person. Work on your posture, body movements, and facial expressions.

Dress appropriately.
Pants optional! Well, not advisable. Dress like you would for a normal job interview. A nice jacket or blouse would look great. Avoid clothes with weird patterns, because they can look weird on camera. Don’t worry, as soon as the interview is over you can wear your sweatpants and over-sized hoodie again!

Do your research.
Before your interview, do proper research about the company. You can showcase your knowledge during the interview to show you are well prepared. Everybody likes their ego stroked in one way or the other. Show that you know what the company is about, and if you are impressed by one of their accomplishments feel free to mention it.
The first one is always the hardest. It will get easier the more interviews will do, like it is with most things in life. Reflect on your interview after you finish, and see how you can improve next time. If a company doesn’t want to hire you after you did your interview, ask for feedback so you know what you have to work on. With that information you can do better at your next interview, and maybe get that job!

Good luck on your online video interview.
